I appreciate your concerns of keeping up with the recent position I took at the elementary school! I have no super powers for working with students with disabilities – I am just like every other teacher. The students do not need any special places, with special teachers. We no longer hide anyone with disabilities from society. We do not need to keep them safe, and we do not need to keep society safe from them. I want to address the language you use about people with disabilities. I have heard you use the word â€Å"retarded.† We no longer use that word to address anyone in society. The language that is supposed to be used is called â€Å"person first language.† To give you an example, it would be like you saying â€Å"that autistic kid.† The correct terminology is, â€Å"a child with autism.† I’d like to tell you a little history about people with disabilities. I know that you were never exposed or able to interact with those people whom had differences from yourself. Well there is a reason for that. As a society, we created the segregation, which is why when you grew up, you probably never saw people with disabilities in your everyday life. Physicians and medical personnel saw people with disabilities as defective. The medical personnel just wanted to â€Å"fix† those with disabilities. What they told parents of a child with a disability was to put them in an institution because it will be the best environment for them, and themselves.
